Pointillism

Third graders have been learning their Warm and Cool colors, they are applying the concept of warm and cool colors to their pointillism project. They are also using their knowledge of foreground, background, and horizon line to complete their pointillist work.

We studied the work of George Seurat and his pointillism (dot painting) 

Students drew a tree, and chose either warm or cool colors to create a pointillist amount of leaves.

They used the back end of the brush to create dots in the leaves.

 

After allowing a day to dry the art, students began drawing a horizon line, small details in the background and at least one detail in the foreground.

Picasso's Flowers of Peace

First grade continued their study of Pablo Picasso this week looking at his work "Flowers of Peace"

I started by asking if they thought this was painted by a professional artist or a student and 90% of them guessed it was painted by a student. We discussed the two hands and the title and what the title could mean.  Students discussed and decided the two hands were two people agreeing to peace over flowers.

Students began by tracing their hands near the lower part of the page.

They then drew circles for the flower and ovals for the petals of the flower. Students traced their hands in black crayon and flowers in warm and cool colored crayons.

The next class, Students colored in their flowers with oil pastels, bringing a ton of bright color into their work.

When the flowers are filled with color, we talked about warm and cool colors.  The warm colors represent one person and the cool colors represent the other person.  When the two colors come together to hold the flowers, the colors combine and create this beautiful bouquet of flowers.

Picasso - Flowers Of Peace

First grade end of trimester

First graders finished painting their primary and mixed secondary colored fish, after finishing the painting, they outlined in sharpie, cut out seaweed and glued it on, these are three of the finished examples.

First grade learned about Mosaic tile art and made fall, warm colored trees.  They ripped brown paper for the tree and branches and glued them to look like a realistic tree.

The following week, students reviewed the warm colors and looked at the trees outside our art room window.  They continued in the mosaic style ripping the red, yellow, and orange paper into a leaf pile, then glueing the leaves onto the tree, filling the space with bright warm colored leaves.

Negative space Warm/ Cool painting

Fourth Grade finished their negative space paintings by filling the negative space with their choice of warm or cool colors, students were required to use all three warm or cool colors

Students enjoyed the colors and how they are bright against the black positive space and it also shows student knowledge of warm and cool colors
