Paper Weave Bedding

 First grade has been learning the skill of weaving these past two weeks, and instead of making a placemat out of paper, I wanted to make things a bit more interesting...

Students started out with a 9" x 9" sheet of color paper

They folded the paper in half and used a ruler to mark lines at 1 inch, 2 inches, 3 inches, etc

When students unfold the paper the lines MUST be on the folded side.  Students then made a line about 1 inch from the non folded side.  This line will be used as a stop sign for the cutting stage.

We used small strips about 2 1/2" x 8" to draw pillows.

Students cut on the folded side of the lines to create strips for weaving.

Students chose complementary colors (colors right across the color wheel from each other) to weave into their blanket.

The weaving pattern is an AB pattern, going over one strip, under another strip, no two colors should touch each other.

After weaving strips to make their blanket, students trim the edges and cut out their pillows.

 Students glue down pillows and leave a little space to glue down their blanket.

After gluing blanket and pillows down, students draw a "morning hair" portrait of themselves, some chose to make theirs sleeping.

After drawing and cutting out their portraits, they tuck their faces under the blankets and have the option of adding stuffed animals next to them in their bed.

first and second grade

Second graders became interior designers last week, mapping out their bedrooms from an overhead perspective.  Students created a key and symbols to stand for each piece of furniture, toys, door, or window.

They also did a watercolor emulation of Vincent VanGogh's  "vase with 12 sunflowers" painting

They first drew with pencil, followed by tracing over the lines with a crayon, the crayon serves as a wax resist for the watercolor, it helps paint stay in the lines.

Finished work will have the table and background painted.

 First grade was eager to bring some spring flowers and color to our snowy community, they folded and cut out petals, stems, and leaves to make a paper flower

Finished work will have a pointillism butterfly flying over the flowers.
