Youth Art Month

I haven't kept up with my posts in a while, and there is a good reason too! I am the Youth Art Month Chair for Minnesota and this past weekend was the Youth Art Month Student Exhibition for Minnesota.  We had 98 Entries from over 40 schools across Minnesota, and a great turn out.  You can check out all the photos on the Youth Art Month Flickr stream HERE.

The three martians

2nd grade took a look at the work of Picasso and his piece "The three musicians"

Students practiced symmetry by folding and cutting out interesting shapes to create martians

Students created a moon background using thick lines

they then used the side of their chalk to create a dust like moon cover

they used ovals to create craters

They added the moon sky with stars 

students glued on their martians 

Picasso Portraits

1st grade is working on all kinds of portraits this month, they started with a realistic portrait, and followed it up with Picasso style portraits.  

Students traced a circle for their face shape, and cut out eyes, nose and mouth.  Much like Picasso, students placed the facial features in fun spots on the face

they then glued the faces onto green paper and used 6 or more colors for the neck and shirt and added a hair color.

Third grade painted their clay superheroes and they are currently on display in Hassan hallways near you!

Fifth graders are finishing up their 1 point perspective roads, each student had to have 3 buildings that go towards 1 vanishing point

Warm/Cool Hands

Second grade learned about warm and cool colors.  We also learned about patterns. 

Students first placed their hand on the paper and traced around their fingers and hand.

They then chose a pattern to make: circle, triangle, square, diamond, heart, and repeated that pattern bigger and bigger all the way to the corners of the page.

 Students used warm colors (Red, Yellow, Orange) inside their hands and cool colors (Blue, Purple, Green) outside their hands.

Finished product has cool colors outside the hand and warm colors inside the hand

SUPER!

Third graders learned about sculptural form and how to build things 3D.  Students created their own superheroes.

Students used the scratch and attach technique to stick clay pieces together.

They sculpted, bodies, arms, and legs, some students made capes and even sidekicks!

This is one of our clay superheroes from outer space.

Clay finishing touches

Second Grade is working on painting their clay food.  We looked at the work of Claes Oldenburg and his clay food, then painted our foods in local color (The actual color of the food)
